People should be alert to the possible interactions of chemicals when taking medicine, even over-the-counter drugs. Mixing incompatible chemicals can inhibit the medicine or cause a toxic reaction. This publication covers food-drug interactions and drug-nutrient reactions. For example, milk will inhibit some forms of penicillin, and even vitamins can cause adverse reactions when taken in excess. Several tables include information on possible interactions and the effect they have on the body.
