an excellent resource for college campuses. They provide publications,
including Four Rs - Refuse, Reduce, Reuse & Recycle Resource
Packet, workshops, internships, and networking:
The
College and University Recycling Council (CURC) was created
to provide information exchange between institutions of higher
education so they may learn collectively about waste reduction,
recycling and waste management issues. CURC has a membership
of 150 college and university based waste management officials
from the US, Mexico, Canada and Europe.
University
of Colorado Recycling Program, rated number one in the country
by the National Recycling Coalition, is a joint effort of the
University's Facilities Management, Housing, and the Student
Union Environmental Center. CU pays only $16 per ton in tipping
fees and still manages to save $60,000 per year in avoided disposal
fees by diverting 40% of campus waste from landfills. In addition,
the sale of recyclable materials generates over $40,000 annually.
More than 12 academic projects have resulted from the program
each year. Students are learning that recycling pays!
The
University of Oregon Recycling Program is a good example
of collaboration among administration, students, facilities
management, and housing. The website is very informative and
includes "how to" information for establishing a recycling
program.
The
University of Waterloo, Canada, has reduced it's solid waste
by 48% from 1987 to the end of 1998. Its website provides a
wide base of information from its audit, recycling and composting
to easy steps to cut waste.

is the journal of (large-scale) composting and organics recycling.
