MASTER GARDENERS

Master Gardener classes are offered once per year in the NW region. Topics of general horticulture information were covered in the 12 week class. Students must also complete 30 hours of community service to qualify for the Master Gardener certificate. Hours may be earned answering horticulture questions on a hot line or they may perform community service in their own neighborhood. Classes are held in the St Joseph and other NW region counties in the spring.

Professors from UMC extension present information about the various horticulture topics. Each 3-hour class deals with a different topic. Information about gardening, soils, annuals and perennials, turf, trees and shrubs, insects, diseases, and pruning is included in the course. Power point presentations and other audio-visual materials are used to demonstrate ideas about some of the topics. Hands-on demonstrations are also used to provide information.
