During chilly winter months, business at Buck's Ice Cream Place on the MU campus slows to a crawl. But two food science graduate students who work there use the downtime to develop new ice cream flavors.

Senior report
An annual report that looks at the economic well being and health status of Missouri seniors is available online. The Missouri Senior Report 2008 provides a county-by-county comparison of how seniors fare in Missouri. The report, developed by the Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) and the MU Extension’s Office of Social and Economic Data Analysis (OSEDA), is useful to communities that need it for planning purposes and tracking trends.

Kindergarten Farm Food Initiative
This program engages children in experiential learning and involves parents and community members by linking schools and families to local food growers. Through activities and events, relationships are established with local farmers who provide both fruit and vegetable snacks in the classroom and education farm trips.

Planning, menu changes can offset higher food costs of Thanksgiving dinner
Based on data from an American Farm Bureau Federation survey, in 2007 it cost an estimated $42.26 to feed 10 people a typical Thanksgiving dinner of turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, buttered rolls, peas, cranberries, a celery and carrots relish tray, pumpkin pie with whipped cream, coffee and milk.

4-H gives youth hands-on look at science
Students poured into a University of Missouri chemistry lab, put on goggles, grabbed aprons and waited for instructions at their lab stations. But on this day, instead of 20-something college students, the lab was filled with MU Extension 4-H members from Boone County.

There's a rising number of fires on and near college campuses. In some cases, students are killed in these fires and alcohol is often involved. Dave Hedrick, who is the director of MU Extension’s Fire and Rescue Training Institute, urges students to use common sense and take measures to make sure their home away from home is safe.
