Preventing and delaying diabetes

    Preventing and delaying diabetes

According to the American Diabetes Association, 79 million Americans have pre-diabetes and are at risk for developing Type 2 diabetes. November is American/National Diabetes Month, a good time to learn more about this quiet health epidemic. The good news is that pre-diabetes and Type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed with some diet and lifestyle changes, such as these:

    • Eat a healthier diet that is high in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean meat and low-fat dairy.
    • Participate in physically activity for at least 30 minutes most days of the week.
    • Maintain a healthy weight by exercising and eating right. Studies have shown that losing even 5 to 7 percent of body weight prevents or delays diabetes by almost 60 percent if you are overweight.
    • Stop smoking.
