For wheat, evaluate the heads for kernel loss
and for bent stems. With lost kernels, evaluate the kernels on the
ground and a rough estimate would be much like harvest loss where 20
kernels per square foot equates approximately to 1 bushel per acre based
on 780,000 seeds per bushel. Bent stems have a wide variation in yield
loss potential dependant on percent bent in field and growth stage.
Studies where 100% of stems were bent indicated a 16% to 55% loss at
soft dough.
