Family Literacy in Kirksville and Milan
Sheryl Ferguson, School-to-Work Coordinator
Model Family Literacy Programs are currently in place in Kirksville and Milan, MO. The two sites are funded through a grant received in January. They provide an additional 20 hours of adult basic education. The Literacy Programs offer adult basic education, GED preparation, workplace readiness, financial management, career awareness, family literacy, and parenting skills.
In addition, the Milan site offers English as a Second Language (ESL) and daily living skills instruction; and the Kirksville site offers assistance with transportation and child care.
The target populations are Head Start parents, JTPA adults, economically disadvantaged adults, and chronically unemployed adults.
The classes are open to any adult in need of the services offered. This project includes computer aided instruction utilizing the PLATO system, as well as GED Interactive software and Microsoft Works software. A literacy component enables students to start a family library for their children and foster improved family interaction. The projects are a collaborative effort between Work Connections, Head Start, New Perspectives, Division of Family Services-FUTURES, Adair County Public Library, Northeast Missouri and Green Hills Community Action Agency, Northeast Missouri Regional Healthcare System, Adult Basic Education Program of Kirksville R-III, Con Agra Frozen Foods, Milan C-2, and Green City R-I Schools.
For further information, contact the Adult Basic Education Coordinator at the Kirksville Area Technical Center at (660)665-2865.
