2009 Volunteer Opportunities

9:00 a.m. to noon.  Volunteers will help with prairie restoration work, which may include fence removal, broadcast seeding, transplanting, and invasive plant removal. Wear protective clothing and bring gloves. We'll have a potluck lunch inside following the work; bring a dish or sandwich fixings to share.

Directions: Take Interstate 70 to Exit 61 (Williamsburg exit); go north to Williamsburg and at four-way stop, go left (west) on Highway D. Go west on Highway D for about 2.5 miles, then go left (south) on Highway D, crossing over 1-70. Continue south on Highway D for about 1.5 miles.

December 30, Cole Camp Prairies IBA Circle, 110th Audubon Christmas Bird Count, Cole Camp, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Participants will meet at The Classic (restaurant on Hwy 52, north of downtown area) at 7:30 AM.  We will organize our quadrants and begin birding as soon as possible. At 5:30 p.m., we'll gather and tally the group counts. $5 registration fee may be paid the morning of the count. Fees go to the Audubon Society to defray the cost of the final tabulation and report for each Circle's official count. On-going Opportunity The Boys and Girls Club in Sedalia is looking for individuals to give presentations on nature subjects for the after school program. Time: 4:30 p.m. When: Third Thursday of each month. Contact: Carrie Leman, (660) 723-9629. Activity is approved for volunteer service.

On-Going Opportunity-CACHE (Conservation Area Bird Counts) An ongoing inventory of most of the conservation areas in the state. We can arrange trips as a group or anyone can go alone to any Conservation Areas in the state and enter reports online. Volunteer Activities in the Planning Stages

Stream Teams - Formation of one or more stream teams. Opportunity for volunteers to get involved in river conservation. MDC advanced training is available for new teams. If you'd like to get involved in a Stream Team project, contact Donnie Nichols, VO Committee Chair at: nichols_donnie@yahoo.com

Adopt an MDC Trail - The Missouri Department of Conservation's Adopt-A-Trail Program is a volunteer program providing opportunities for hikers, bicyclists and equestrians to assist conservation area staff by monitoring, maintaining and enhancing trails and trailhead facilities. There are many Conservation Areas in Benton and Pettis Counties from which our Chapter can choose. Emily Horner indicated that she would like our chapter to take over stewardship of a new trail in the glade above the Lost Valley Fish Hatchery. Learn more here .
