Basic soil testing analyzes nutrient content and fertility status. Results include fertilizer and lime recommendations. Additional tests are available for nutrient management plans, environmental issues, potting mixes, compost, manure and water usage. Each sample should contain about 1½ cups of dry soil from 6 to 7 inches deep. Consult our soil testing publications for specific instructions. Results are typically provided within two weeks.
Crop producers and home gardeners can bring in field or garden samples to have the soil analyzed. Soil testing provides analysis of pH, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, organic matter percent, neutralizable acidity, cation exchange capacity and effective neutralizing material (EMN). Customers will receive recommendations for nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and liming (or acidifying). Tests for nitrate, boron, zinc, sulfur, iron, manganese and copper also are available at additional cost. For information on sampling methods, see G9215 Soil Sampling Pastures. Soil samples cost $14.50 each for basic testing.
