SHOW CARING DURING HOLIDAYS

By Nina Chen, Ph.D.

Holidays provide a lot of happy time for most people and families.  But for some people who live alone, are new in the community, are just divorced or widowed, or live in a nursing home without any relatives around, holidays are usually a painful time.

Try to be sensitive to the needs of your friends, neighbors, or relatives during holiday seasons.  Share your sense of caring with them. Invite them to come to your home to celebrate the holidays together, send them a greeting card, give them a call, or bake cookies for them.  Your caring will mean a lot to them, in particular during holidays.

Holidays also provide opportunities for your children to learn and share a sense of caring and appreciation.  For instance, bake cookies together with your children and ask them to bring some cookies to your older neighbors who live alone.  Bring your children to visit nursing home residents. Encourage your children to send a greeting card to their long distance grandparents or relatives, or nursing home residents.
