“We have been asked to participate in an Organizational Culture survey led by The Ohio State University,” says Michael Ouart, vice provost and director of MU Extension.
Results of the survey, which was sent yesterday to MU Extension faculty and staff, will provide each of the 12 north central states with aggregated information that will assist in learning more about the work environment—specifically, organizational culture, communication, values, beliefs and norms.
“I am highly supportive of this endeavor, as it is in alignment with Goal 6 and Goal 7 of our strategic plan that addresses attracting, retaining and empowering a high performing workforce,” says Ouart.

University of Missouri Extension council members from across the state learned about emerging research at MU and how it connects to citizens during the ninth annual Council to Campus conference, June 20-21 in Columbia.
“MU’s research and extension programs have public value and improve citizens’ quality of life by reducing costs to society, empowering citizens to implement change, protecting the environment or building the economy,” said Anita Hampton, chair of the University of Missouri State Extension Council.
MU Chancellor R. Bowen Loftin spoke to the group on the value extension has to the entire state and the Columbia campus in fulfilling the land-grant mission. He said that extension is core to higher education and a critical part of the land-grant mission.
The two-day program included “MU Extension 101,” which provided an overview of extension and the university’s land-grant mission. A pre-conference session showcased research and program development on the MU campus. Workshops looked at a variety of extension programs and initiatives, including Adaptive Stay Strong, Stay Healthy, which helps people with disabilities engage in more physical activity, and an energy efficiency training program that will be offered to real estate agents, mortgage lenders and appraisers throughout the state and online.
Other sessions explored the role of MU Extension in the global food system, how MU Extension’s community arts program fosters creativity, innovation and economic opportunity, and how farmers can add value to their operations by introducing horticulture products.
Tim Schnakenberg, named 2013 County Program Director of the Year, shared his experiences working with council members in Stone County.
In every county in Missouri, councils of elected citizens guide local extension programming and manage finances and personnel for local extension operations.
Council to Campus provides council members an opportunity to share ideas and concerns with state-level faculty and administrators as well as with council members in other counties, said Tony DeLong, county council coordinator.
The attendees also heard from Michael Ouart, vice provost and director of extension, about federal and state budgets. He shared work that the campus does to support local programs and staff levels.
A significant part of the 2014 Summer Fire School, conducted by MU Extension’s Fire and Rescue Training Institute earlier this month in Jefferson City, involved boat rescue training.
“In today’s fire service, we are multitasking like you wouldn’t believe,” said Todd Ackerson, chief of the Kansas City Fire Department’s rescue division. He’s also an instructor for MU FRTI’s Summer Fire School.
Despite the name, the Summer Fire School covers a lot more than fire. Ackerson teaches courses on boat rescue. “Fire departments all across the state are used for water rescue and boat rescue,” Ackerson said.
Participants in the boat rescue training spent one day in the classroom followed by three days of hands-on learning on the Missouri River, including an evening drill.

On June 9 an important email was sent to all university faculty and staff with the subject line “UM Information Security Training Instructions.” Although the email did not come from a missouri.edu address (firstname.lastname@example.org), the message, from Beth Chancellor, UM System chief information security officer, was a legitimate email. You might need to check your junk email folder to find the email.

University employees are an important line of defense against cyber-criminal attacks. To help educate you about your role in keeping information assets and IT systems secure, we have contracted with SANS, an organization that specializes in security training and research, to deliver a series of online information security training modules.
To access the training modules, please visit http://makeitsafe.missouri.edu/. Go to the Security Awareness section and click on the “SANS Securing the Human” link. You must complete four, brief modules by Dec. 31, 2014 in order to comply with the training requirements within the UM Information Security Program. UM Chief Information Security Officer
This is good, common-sense security training that is required for all university faculty and staff, both full- and part-time. As you can see, you have until the end of the year to finish. The training consists of four videos and a three-question test after each video. It only takes about 10 minutes to complete.
Unfortunately, this training was purchased on a certain number of seats and thus student employees and people with courtesy appointments (that would include all county secretaries) will not be able to directly take the training. In a conversation I had with Sue Wille, FNEP coordinator in the east Urban Region, she confirmed that it would be a good idea to request all field staff to allow county secretaries to watch as they take the training so that they too can benefit from the training.
The training program does not issue a certificate immediately upon completion of the required modules. Certificates will be provided via email twice a month for users who complete the training.
For those who have not completed the training, email reminders will be sent and I’ve been told that those emails will come from a @missouri.edu address.

The Educational Attainment Thematic Team seeks individuals interested in serving on a development team for a mobile website, says Melissa Bess, team facilitator. The mobile website will contain educational information about college and career readiness.
“Parents, junior high and high school students, college students, and adults returning to school will find helpful information about preparing for and being successful in postsecondary education and training,” says Bess. “Individuals already in the workforce or entering the workforce will also find helpful information about career readiness.”
The development team will provide the educational content needed for the mobile website and gather information to successfully launch the project. If you are interested in serving on this development team, please contact Bess as soon as possible with information about what expertise you could provide.
Beginning July 1, the university will change its per diem allowance for domestic overnight travel outside the state of Missouri, according to Tiffany Hughes, MU Extension assistant administrative manager.
The new out-of-state per diem rates are based on the Contiguous United States (CONUS) rates as determined by the federal government. Specific meal rates by location can be found at http://www.defensetravel.dod.mil/site/perdiemCalc.cfm. Meal allowances for overnight travel within the state of Missouri will remain at $42.
The per diem rate change will take place automatically within the Travel & Expense system, says Hughes. Beginning July 1, Travel & Expense will automatically populate the applicant’s per diem for the day based on that day’s final destination. For example, on Day One of a trip you start in Columbia and drive to St. Louis to catch a flight to New York, where you spend the rest of the day. New York would be the location used for that day’s per diem since it is the final destination of the day.
A one-hour non-tenure track dossier-training workshop is set for 9 a.m., Aug. 5. ISE #232 “NTT: Dossier Synopsis” workshop, presented via Adobe Connect, is intended for anyone preparing dossiers or who will be writing evaluation letters for candidates, according to Johanna Reed Adams, MU Extension community leadership development state specialist.
Individuals planning to submit a dossier for promotion in the fall are strongly encouraged to attend the workshop, Adams says. Register through the ISE system to attend (ISE #232).
“Learn about the general information and tips to prepare and improve your dossier, especially the CV and Summary of Accomplishments,” says Adams. “The voluntary NTT promotion policy is for full-time, non-regular faculty members within MU Extension. This process applies to regional faculty members and to campus faculty members in an academic unit that does not have an NTT process.”
Extension faculty members may apply for one of three ranked positions: assistant extension professional, associate extension professional or extension professional. For faculty members who elect to participate, the NTT promotion system provides a mechanism to recognize extension scholarship and professional growth. Regional and campus faculty members who plan to apply for the next round should discuss their plans with their supervisors as they build their performance expectations for fiscal year 2015.
The next round of applications is due to supervisors by Nov. 1. Contact Adams for answers to questions on the NTT process.
MU Extension would like to identify participants for the 2015 North Central NELD (National Extension Leadership Development) program, according to Julie Middleton, MU Extension director of organizational development. This program is designed to build leaders in cooperative extension at all levels and provide them with vision, courage and tools to lead in a changing world.
Participants will articulate their personal philosophy of leadership; apply leadership skills to their role in extension; analyze the role of leadership in achieving purposeful change; examine the value of diversity of thought and culture; and create a network of colleagues from across the region to share challenges and experiences.

“The internal selection process will include a committee recommendation and final selection by our director of extension,” says Middleton. “We will notify applicants by Sept. 15 of the outcome of the process and forward the applications of the selected Missouri participants to the North Central NELD leadership team.”
