Drink plenty of fluids

Soaring summer temperatures and high humidity means your body will need more fluids to keep it working properly, to maintain a healthy temperature, and to avoid feeling fatigued. 


Fee generation plan update

“Extension faculty have been gaining experience with the online fee calculation tool for almost a year,” says Rhonda Gibler, assistant vice provost. “More than 175 budget forms have been submitted for programs where a fee is charged.”

Program directors have been working with regional and state faculty to develop budget worksheets for the first 20% of the named programs. A program director update and list of program fees will be coming out this fall. They are beginning to focus on the next 40% of named programs for FY’11.

On October 1, 2010 the recommended fee distribution begins to be implemented by faculty and staff for MU Extension fee-based programs AND statewide programs where base fees have been designated.

“Faculty should be looking at the recommended distribution to the University calculated with the Fee Generation Worksheet,” Gibler says. “If they can reasonably meet a target of 50%, they remit such funds to MU Extension. If meeting a 50% target would pose financial issues at the local level, counties are asked to make specific plans regarding how they will make remittances in the future.”

There was a question about whether faculty time was to include preparation time and delivery time. “At this time we have asked for folks to at least capture the teaching time,” explains Gibler. The cost of prep and development time will be addressed as programs are reviewed within their program area and standards are set for what should be collected on each program.

“Those are certainly real costs,” Gibler added. “We don’t expect faculty to capture those costs on programs that haven’t been reviewed by program committees.”

Faculty present at family and consumer sciences annual conference

Marsha Alexander, WC housing and environmental design specialist and Karen Elliott, WC nutrition and health education specialist served as session presenters at the Missouri EFACS annual conference. Alexander presented four sessions entitled Smart Lighting Strategies for Your Home. Elliott presented four sessions entitled Eating from the Garden. Approximately 300 MO junior and high school family and consumer sciences educators attended the four day conference in Springfield, July 26-29, 2010.


Proffer hosts candidate forum

Richard Proffer, extension business development specialist, served as host for a candidate forum July 27, 2010 for candidates in the Cape Girardeau County Presiding Commissioner race. Seven of the eight candidate participated in the forum sponsored by the Cape Girardeau County Extension Council and the Farm Bureau of Cape Girardeau County. Grazing dairy team tours Georgia

Seven members of the MU Extension grazing dairy team learned from and shared with their counterparts in other states and toured dairy farms. “Missouri is becoming known as the place to go for pasture-based dairy information,” said Tony Rickard, state extension dairy specialist. The group came home with new appreciation of their home-state advantages. “We met with the newly formed dairy grazing group from Florida and Georgia,” said Rob Kallenbach, state extension forage specialist. “They are about where we were eight years ago, struggling with the challenges.” Other extension specialists taking part were Ryan Milhollin, Columbia; Joe Koenen, Unionville; Ted Probert, Hartville, Stacy Hambelton, Gainesville, and Gene Schmitz, Warsaw. “Some members of the grazing team make a tour about every year,” Kallenbach said. “Traveling in a van, you get lots of time to share ideas and learn from each other.”


CD faculty in New Orleans

The eight extension faculty and a graduate student presented papers, workshops, or posters recently at the joint conference of the Community Development Society and the International Association for Community Development in New Orleans: Johanna Reed Adams, Eric Evans, Sharon Gulick, Steve Jeanetta, Dean Larkin, Mary Simon Leuci, Wilson Majee and Kenny Sherin (graduate assistant working with EXCEED).

Sherin received the Community Development Society Student Recognition Award recognizing his evaluation research with the EXCEED program. Leuci is a member of the CDS Roots and Wings Campaign Committee honored with a CDS President’s Award for outstanding work in launching and implementing the successful development and endowment campaign for the Society.

Epsilon Sigma Phi award nominations due September 1

“It’s that time of the year…time to consider nominating a colleague for one of the Epsilon Sigma Phi Awards,” says Vera Massey, ESP awards committee chair.

For most awards, the person must be an Epsilon Sigma Phi member. However, there are a few exceptions: the Friend of Extension Award, Visionary Leadership Award, and State Meritorious Support Service Award. The list of active ESP members at: 2009-2010 Active ESP Members.

“Please think of colleagues who are deserving of recognition,” says Massey. “Then check out the ESP award guidelines and nomination forms: 2010 ESP Awards. You can also check on Past Award Recipients.

“For the team award, don’t be shy in nominating a team of which you are a member!” Massey added. The team award was designed to recognize outstanding efforts of extension staff teams in responding to one or more of the national initiatives identified by the Cooperative Extension System.

UMEA award nominations due September 3

“I would like to remind you to consider nominating yourself or a colleague for an UMEA award,” says Randa Doty, UMEA awards and nominations committee chair. They are due September 3, 2010. This is a great opportunity to let others know about programs and to win professional or program development funds. Please view the UMEA website to find award descriptions and award nomination forms.

“I would also like to ask you to start thinking about serving as an officer of UMEA or nominating your colleagues,” Doty added. “Elections will be held at the Galaxy Conference in October. If you would like to volunteer or nominate anyone, please let me or an officer know you are interested. We will be electing a 2nd vice president, secretary, and treasurer this year.”


College Colors Day

MU Extension offices statewide are invited to join the 2010 celebration of College Colors Day on Friday, Sept. 3. The out-state offices demonstrating the most Tiger spirit in their decorations and apparel that day are eligible to win prizes that include four suite tickets to a men’s basketball game, a framed Mizzou print and life-sized Truman the Tiger cutouts. The MU Licensing and Trademark Office again will provide to each county and regional office and TeleCenter a “spirit pack” of items, slated for mailing in the coming week. National Extension Leadership Development Program

“We would like to identify an individual to attend the North Central National Extension Leadership Development (NELD) program,” says Julie Middleton, director of organizational development. “This program is designed to build leaders in Cooperative Extension and provide them with vision, courage, and tools to lead in a changing world.”

Leaders who participate in this program will articulate their personal philosophy of leadership, apply leadership skills to their role in extension, analyze the role of leadership in achieving purposeful change, examine the value of diversity of thought and culture, and create a network of colleagues from across the region to share challenges and experiences.

The session dates are January 19-22, 2011 in Colorado Springs; April 2-9 in Mexico; June 12-16 Washington DC; September 21-24 in St. Paul Minnesota. I have attached a program overview for your reference.

To apply, please submit the application and letter (no longer than 2 pages) expressing why you would like to participate in the program.

These should be submitted electronically to your regional director if you are in the field or to your program director if you are located on a campus. The deadline for me to receive all documentation is September 6, 2010.

Once your supervisor (RD or PD) writes a brief letter of support and signs the application, he or she will submit all documentation electronically to Middleton at

The selection process will include committee recommendations and final selection by Michael Ouart, director of extension. Following our internal process, we will forward the application of the selected Missouri participant to the national NELD leadership team.

Community Development Academy fall 2010

Register for the 2010 UMEA Galaxy Conference!

“October 5-6 are the dates for the 2010 UMEA Galaxy Conference at the Windermere Conference Center in Roach, MO." says Marsha Alexander, 2010 Galaxy conference chair.  “The registration form is available on the UMEA website

This year’s conference theme is “Making a Difference for a Stronger Missouri”.   The Galaxy Conference is a time for professional development, networking and association meetings.  There is no registration fee for attending Galaxy but attendees are responsible for room costs and transportation.

UM President Gary Forsee will address the conference attendees on October 6.  UM Extension administrators Dr. Michael Ouart and Beverly Coberly will provide an administrative update. 

Jim Lindquist, assistant deirector of Kansas State University Extension will serve as the banquet keynote speaker.  His presentation, Making a Difference, will be a discussion of life experiences and how we as extension professionals, impact those we reach with our educational programs.

This year’s professional development sessions will focus on technology, animal rights, program evaluation, customer service and the forthcoming non-tenure track faculty career ladder. 

There will also be a health fair, silent auction and lots of fun for everyone who attends.  Please make plans to attend this event.  Registrations must be received by September 24. 


Coming and going

Chris Bromley, extension’s pre-award grants and contracts specialist for AMT fiscal, has accepted a position as senior grants and contracts administrator with the Office of Sponsored Programs Administration. We appreciate her contribution and commitment to extension. She will be greatly missed. We also congratulate Chris on this new opportunity and wish her well. Chris’ last official day will be August 31st.

“We remain committed to providing excellent customer service to all extension departments,” says Callie Glascock, administrative manger. “In an effort to make this transition as smooth as possible, we have temporarily reassigned responsibilities to ensure that both pre award and post award activities are covered.
