Ideas for developing your volunteer plan

It is never too early to begin planning your volunteer work. There are many opportunities for you to volunteer to teach others about the Internet. You will need to develop this yourself. You may want to team up with someone else. The remaining class periods will give you a chance to visit with others in the class and collaborate.

In thinking about your volunteer plan, you might want to consider the following:

  • What are your interests?
  • Where do you volunteer now? Are there needs related to the Internet there?
  • Do you like to teach in front of a group?
  • Do you feel more comfortable assisting in a computer lab?
  • Do you like to develop materials?
  • Would you consider writing an electronic newsletter?

Following are some of the volunteer opportunities we could suggest:

  • Assist in mining local information for a Community Information Network
  • Develop web pages for non-profit community groups
  • Teach groups various aspects of using the Internet
  • Staff help lines for Internet Service Providers
  • Intergenerational lab sessions in school labs with students and their parents
  • Writing material for handouts
  • Teaching senior citizens how to use the web.
  • Assisting with Internet access sites
  • Teaching Internet Master classes
