Processing calves at Summer 1999 Program

Marketing Program

Mission Statement

The intent of the program is to cooperatively add value, maximizing profit to our market calves and to obtain production and harvest data allowing members to improve breeding genetics, health, and husbandry practices with the anticipation of retaining ownership.

 Overview

The South Ozarks Premier Beef Marketers (SOPBM) combines calf crops to maximize efficiency and increase marketing leverage. This program is presently being undertaken with support from the University of Missouri Extension program. SOPBM will accomplish this goal through commingling these calves at a backgrounding facility, intensive sorting, backgrounding for 45 to 60 days, re-sorting, and marketing. There is presently a group planned for May and another for November annually.

By joining strengths, SOPBM members are able to offer semi load groupings of like feeder calves with the appearance of being from one farm.  By treating all alike and to the current first class standards, tagging them to promote our program and being responsible for their quality at sale, SOPBM has the best possible product to offer the buyer.  With our additional services (tracking and calculating performance and costs, as well as providing specific information on each calf offered, i.e., breed, color, USDA graded muscle and frame to potential bidder's), SOPBM has the highest possible opportunity for success.

Calves shall meet rigid and high entry standards, be commingled, sorted and backgrounded to develop uniformity and market weight, and offered for sale in sorted uniform "pot" load quantities (50,000 lbs.)

 Operations

SOPBM is governed by participating producer members. Each enrollee for each sale becomes a voting member, has one vote and may vote on all presented issues or provide a proxy.  A 3-member board of Directors oversees day to day needs with assistance in such matters by the members at-large.  The Board, with advice by members, will establish sale guidelines and requirements and determine when to market calves. Acceptance/rejection of any sale bid is by simple majority of all members owning calves in each offering.

Annual Membership meetings are required and will be announced ahead of time with the primary purpose to elect a new board of Directors and discuss matters as should arise pertaining to the operation of SOPBM. All votes need a simple majority of current members to pass any issues. One half of the membership provides a quorum.
