Nutrition and Lifeskills for Missouri Families

WHEREAS, the National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable, the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, the Cancer Research Foundation of America, and the American Digestive Health Foundation have joined together to encourage Americans to observe March 2002 as National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month; and

WHEREAS, colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in men and women combined in Missouri as well as in the United States; and

WHEREAS, an estimated 3,300 Missourians will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer this year and 1,300 Missourians will die from this disease in 2002; and

WHEREAS, less than 65 percent of Missourians above age 50 receiving annual screenings for colorectal cancer; and

WHEREAS, there often are no symptoms of colorectal cancer but regular screenings can reduce the number of deaths from this disease by 30-80 percent by detecting cancerous or pre-cancerous conditions early, when treatment is most effective; and

WHEREAS, education can help inform the public of methods of early detection and prevention; and

WHEREAS, the state of Missouri, Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Bureau of Cancer Control in partnership with the Missouri Cancer Consortium, the American Cancer Society, and the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention remain committed and dedicated to inform the public about colorectal cancer prevention and screening:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BOB HOLDEN, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF MISSOURI, do hereby proclaim the month of March 2002 to be

COLORECTAL CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

In Missouri and commend this observance to our citizens, public health agencies, volunteer agencies, health care providers and health care agencies throughout Missouri.
