Description: Educates teachers and resource staff about ways they can comply with the new wellness policies, including how they can implement a school wellness policy.
Curriculum/program overview: As part of Federal Regulations, schools receiving money through the school lunch program have been required to adopt a school wellness policy by the Fall of 2006. Overall, the intention is to make children healthier by having them adopt healthier eating habits and increasing their physical activity. In the past, teachers have frequently used food as a reward in the classroom; however, this practice teaches children to consume food for reasons other than physical hunger. The School Wellness program focuses on what can be done in the classroom by teachers to reward children without using food as the reward.
