![]() Welcome to HES Impact, a spirited look at key programs involving state and regional specialists in Human Environmental Sciences Extension (HES). Faculty at the University of Missouri-Columbia's College of HES research issues affecting Missourians in the areas of textiles and apparel management, food science and nutrition, environmental design, consumer and family economics, human development and family studies, and social work. Through Extension, our specialists take that knowledge to Missourians in the form of programming that reaches all corners of the state. I'm so proud of this dedicated work aimed to assist Missouri families and communities. The impact described in most of these articles is the result of strong cooperative efforts between state and regional Extension specialists, networking with other agencies, and, most importantly, the determination and talent of Missouri citizens. This issue of Impact features three articles related to supporting families-at-risk, including addressing issues such as teen pregnancy and parenting education as well as an example of our work within prison walls. Another features the progress of the Beardstown Ladies who collectively studied investments and became an inspiration for Missourians in the area of financial planning. Business connections are highlighted in the stories about a collaboration with McDonalds to reach growing families and with the apparel industry to encourage recycling of textile waste. Health emphases include a special conference which teaches cultural sensitivity and a community-based effort to study local health challenges. An Extension faculty member at MU collaborates with a regional specialist to produce local research results which are aiding the southwestern area of the state to address community service and planning issues. And, finally, we introduce you to our new HES Extension WEB site, a new tool to support our regional specialists and other interested persons with information and resources available from our College through the magic of cyberspace.
