Update on Objective Progress: May - July 2009
Boone County Objectives: FY-09
Community Interaction Summary: 2009
Information:
Community Description: Location: Boone County is equidistant from St. Louis and Kansas City, in a region known as "Mid-Missouri". In 2007 the population was 152,435. Its county seat, Columbia, is the fourth largest city in Missouri. Other significant cities within the county include: Ashland, Sturgeon, Centralia, Harrisburg, Rocheport and Hallsville.
Economy: The economy of Boone County is historically dominated by Education, Healthcare and the Insurance industry in the Columbia area. Jobs in Government are also common, either in Columbia or a half-hour away in Jefferson City. The Columbia Regional Airport and the Missouri River Port of Rocheport connect the region with trade and transportation.
Demographics: There were 53,094 households out of which 30.30% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.50% were married couples living together, 10.40% had a female householder, and 40.90% were non-families. In the county the population was spread out with 22.80% under the age of 18, 19.90% from 18 to 24, 29.90% from 25 to 44, 18.80% from 45 to 64, and 8.60% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years.
Community: Boone County has been active in promoting the benefits of a healthy lifestyle to its’ diverse community. Columbia has been blessed with, a $22 million federal grant to build the proper infrastructure to support walking and biking as a means of transportation, organizations like PedNET, and a champion in Mayor Darwin Hindman. Our hope is to replicate and spread the successes in Columbia to other Boone County Communities, create initiatives to coincide with current ongoing projects, and promote the existing resources of Extension.
