Introduction and Crop Report
By Heather Benedict, Agronomist Specialist

This is Heather Benedict, Regional Agronomy Specialist.  I am based out of Bethany Mo.  I serve Worth, Gentry, Harrison, Mercer, Grundy, Daviess, Caldwell and Livingston Counties.

I am the newest voice on the extension connection. I will be bringing you information on your crops, weeds, and other information which may be of concern for your agricultural endeavors.

The weather is starting to cool and crops are beginning to ripen.  And although the cool weather is welcomed by many, it is a mixed blessing for the corn and soybean producers.  With the variability of the weather comes a concern of an early frost.  Many of the fields have been planted late due to the wet weather this spring.  The cool days this summer have contributed to the slowed maturity of many of the crops.  Corn is especially dependant on the heat for maturity.

The good news is that many of the crops have matured past the stage in which insects or weed growth will affect the yield.   So all that can be done now is to wait and hope that the weather will stay warm long enough for the crops to ripen and that the rain will hold off until the harvest can be brought in from the field.

This year marks the tenth year in which roundup ready corn is commercially available.  Roundup ready soybeans have been available for 12 years.  With the conversion to roundup ready crops has come the development of glyphosate resistant weeds.  This problem is being addressed by a study on the University of Missouri campus in Columbia.  If you have weeds that may be glyphosate resistant and would like to know if they qualify for this study, please contact me by phone at (660) 425-6434,  e-mail at benedicth@missouri.edu or contact your local extension office and have them contact me.

If you desire further information on this or any other topic contact your local University of Missouri Extension office.  University of Missouri and Extension programs are open to all.  Thank you for your time.
