Being Thankful
By Heather Benedict, Agronomist Specialist

Today I don’t have any specific tips to give you.  I only want to remind us all to be thankful.  With so much change and uncertainty lately it is easy to become overwhelmed with worry and stress.  Instead, we should take the time to remember all that we have to be grateful for.

One of the things I am grateful for this week is community spirit.  I am heartened to see how the communities of northwest Missouri can work together for their common good.  The project of starting a farmers market in Bethany comes to mind.  I have had the privilege of seeing how much can be accomplished when concerned people pitch in.

Another reason I have to be grateful for is the weather.  It is nice to have the freezing weather fully here.  Now is the time to wait and let the perennials rest for the winter so that in spring they will be hearty and strong.  The cold weather is also useful in controlling the insect populations.  With the ground this cold it is the time to put on the fall nitrogen applications.  There will be less loss of nitrogen during the winter with the cold weather and it will be ready to help boost the spring plant growth.  If you don’t like the cold weather, you can be thankful to have something to comment on.

If you do have any questions or concerns, please remember that you have a resource in the University of Missouri extension.  Whether it be a question about cooking a turkey or on how to raise one, we can help you with research based information on your questions.  We will be happy to find the most recent information on your concern.  With all of the information and misinformation that is available now, it is good to know there is a place to find practical research based answers to questions.
