Welcome to our potager,
commonly known in the western world as a kitchen garden. This is the
theme for the 2009 Vegetable Bed, a small part of the Master Gardener
Demonstration Garden this year at Nathanael Greene Park. The kitchen
garden is a place to grow things you bring into the kitchen —
vegetables, fruit, berries, herbs, edible and cut flowers. It is a place
of beauty and bounty, a place that stimulates and delights the senses.
The perfect blend of aesthetics and utility, the kitchen garden is a
paradise where you don’t just look, touch, and smell, but also taste.
Your kitchen garden need
not be strictly functional – it can be magical. Beds don’t have to be
limited to squares and rectangles. Vegetables grow just as happily in
round, curved, triangular or long, thin, snaking plots. Plant in
imaginative ways that set the potager apart from the ordinary vegetable
garden. There are countless options, all using the contrasting colors,
textures and growth habits of different vegetables. A place to where
herbs, fruit, and flowers are companion planted to attract beneficial
insects, deter pests, and for you to enjoy. We hope to inspire, educate,
and motivate all who see the garden to try something new in their own
gardens.
