Student Expectations for Class

EXCEL is a hands-on class and participation from class members is essential. These are the expectations for students in the class:

  • Class attendance
  • Work with class members to arrange and plan one of the monthly EXCEL team meetings
  • Reading of regular correspondence from the team and about leadership/projects
  • Submission of one column per month. Not all submissions will be published but the writing is a reflective piece on leadership, volunteerism or a community need/issue based on items learned at previous monthly team meeting.
  • Development of an individual project plan to improve a community or meet a community need and the implementation of that plan.
  • An extension specialist will meet with team members one-on-one about their plans as needed.

Classes are held in Ash Grove, Willard, Republic and other county locations. Dinner is included at the start of each class for participants and guests.

Individual project plans vary from organizing an event to working on existing projects. Here are some other examples:

  • Students can work in groups on a larger project;
  • Students can join with a past EXCEL member to help complete a community project;
  • Work with Greene County MU Extension on a current or ongoing project or event;
  • Choose to give presentations to any group in the county (Chambers, Rotary, etc) about EXCEL and what they learned from various programs;
  • Organize a community betterment night in Republic, Ash Grove or Willard
  • Give 15 hours of service to a local non-profit.
