Ways
to Pay for College, Part 2
Increases of higher education costs have made it
more difficult for families to pay for college. But difficult is not the
same as impossible. Opportunities exist with proper planning, a little
creativity, being smart about leveraging finances and extensive homework.
College
Parents of America offers these suggestions to help families pay for
college:
-
Seek out
work/study programs. This may mean a paid internship in which the
student can alternate working a semester in their field of study and
college credit, and then attend classes the following semester. Some
schools provide free or reduced tuition in exchange for working part
time on campus.
-
Pursue
scholarships from multiple sources. Start this search as a sophomore
in high school.
-
Leverage
scholarships and grants. It is possible to find matching private
sector aid.
-
Borrow for
college, but avoid overextending.
