   FIBER RETREAT HAND SPUN YARN COMPETITION RULES

1. A maximum of two entries per class per person.
2. All entries must be spun by the person on the entry card.
3. Each item entered must have an attached entry card filled out at registration.
4. NO MAIL IN ENTRIES ACCEPTED.
5. All yarns shall be neatly wound on a two-yard niddy-noddy and gently figure eight tied in 4 places. Skeins must be at least 2 ounces except the challenge skeins, which may be ½ oz. A scale will be available to weight skeins on.
6. Except Class A and E skeins must be two-ply.

CHECK IN FOR SKEINS WILL BE FRIDAY EVENING FROM 7-9 PM AND SATURDAY MORNING FROM 8-10 AM. CHECK IN AT SKEIN REGISTRATION TABLE ONLY. NO ONE IS AUTHORIZED TO ACCEPT SKEINS EXCEPT THOSE WORKING THE TABLE. DO NOT LEAVE SKEINS WITHOUT CHECKING IN FIRST. SKEINS WILL BE RELEASED AFTER SATURDAY EVENING MEAL.

 

JUDGING CRITERIA AND PERCENTAGES

10 % General Overall Appearance
25% Preparation for Exhibit, clean, properly skeined and tied, listed yardage and
weight
20% Suitability of Fiber to yarn – amount of twist, diameter of yarn
45% Technique – Twist evenly executed, direction of twist, appropriate plying twist,
diameter consistent throughout, structurally durable, yarns designed
consistent, dyeing/blending consistent.

ENTRY CARD

You will be given an entry card at registration to fill out with the following information:

Class, Weight, Yardage, Fiber Content, Breed (if known), Color (if natural or dyed), Blend Percentages, and purpose. You must have this information to fill out your registration card properly.


We have revised the skein competition. You may have any natural fiber skein entered into each category. There will no longer be categories by specific fiber. The new categories are:
A. Single ply

B. Two ply

C. Novelty yarn

D. Lace Weight – greater than l8 wraps per inch

E. Spindle spun one ply – not spun on a wheel

F. Juniors – up to age l6 – any natural fiber 2 ply yarn

G. Best use of a Blend: Alpaca/cashmere, Angora/silk, linen/cotton, Llama/wool, etc. The fibers must be blended together, not one ply of one fiber and a separate ply of another fiber. State the fibers blended and be specific about use.
 

CHALLENGE COMPETITION CLASSES

BREEDERS SKEIN – BEST SKEIN FROM YOUR OWN FLOCK – 100 PERCENT WOOL

SPINNERS BASKET – AT LEAST 4 DIFFERENT FIBERS – 2 PLY, ½ OZ SKEINS. SHOULD COLOR COORDINATE TOGETHER.

AWARDS FOR THE SKEIN COMPETITION

Ribbons for first, second, and third places in all classes.

$l0.00 fiber certificate for Best Breeders Skein given by Barakel Farm, Alton, MO in memory of their Border Leicester ewe “Queenie”.

$25.00 Vender Gift Certificate for Best Spinners Basket

However, there must be at least 3 entries in each of the Challenge Classes for the certificates to be awarded.
