Making an PVC Niddy Noddy with Jean Horner
The Niddy Noddy is the tool used to skein
yarn. Usually made of wood, the standard Niddy Noddy produces
a skein of yarn measuring two yards each round.
Sometimes you need something more durable than a nice wooden Niddy
Noddy. A PVC Niddy Noddy can be twisted to lay flat or taken
apart for easy storage. A PVC Niddy Noddy can withstand water
and can be used for dying and setting of yarn.
We will be making a set of PVC Niddy Noddys, the standard 2 yards
and a 1 yard. They will have an interchangeable center bar.
You will hear the history of the Niddy Noddy, learn to use your
Niddy Noddy to make a skein, and the rhyme used to count your
rounds. We will finish the class with dipping a sample skein
of wool in an indigo dye pot while on the 1 yard Niddy Noddy.
You will use a measuring tape, markers, a hand saw and sandpaper in
the class and be exposed to an Indigo dye pot.
All materials and tools to make the Niddy Noddys and dye and gloves
for a sample skein will be included.
You will need to bring a bobbin of light colored wool, approximately
25 yards, a spinning wheel or lazy kate.
You will leave the class with a cd containing the materials list,
instructions, history, and video on winding a skein with your PVC
Niddy Noddy.

Portable Kumihimo with Lavinia Thornhill
Kumihimo is the art of braiding based on a Japanese style using
anywhere from
8-32 strands of threads. This course will use a hand held disk with
slots for controlling tension of the threads and the final braid. A
weight on the actual braid is suggested but not critical to the
finish product.
We will explore different types of weights, threads, and patterns to
create a functional braid. By functional this braid can be used as
drawstring for
pouches and clothing, as lacing for costumes, or couching material
in
embroidery.
We will create an 8-strand round braid in 2 colors. Students may
bring crochet
cotton in weight and colors (at least 2 contrasting) of their
choice. Instructor will have instructions, disk, bobbins and some
threads available
