The Many Aspects of Divorce
You probably know the statistics—over half of all marriages in the U.S. end in divorce. Just because divorce is common doesn’t make it any easier to cope with when you’re the one going through it. Divorce is one of the most stressful life events a person can experience. People often do not realize the many ways it is going to impact them and may underestimate how long it will take them to “get over it”.
Divorce is not an event with a clear beginning and an end—it is a process. The process often begins long before the couple separates or starts legal proceedings. The process may last for years—especially if there are children involved. Understanding the many aspects of divorce can sometimes help a person gain insight that will ease the stress of the situation. Focusing on future goals is healthier than being fixated on the past.
Researchers designated six overlapping stages or aspects of divorce. Not everyone experiences all of these, nor are they experienced in a certain order.
