Mulching for Summer Care
Mulching is one of the most important gardening practices. A mulch layer is beneficial in the following ways:
The ideal mulch layer for a flower garden is between two and four inches deep. Spread the mulching material around the annuals and perennials covering all bare soil areas in the garden. Avoid covering the crowns or growing points of the plants
Several different materials can be used for mulching. Many waste products from the landscape work well including dry grass clippings or shredded leaves. In addition to these waste materials many purchased materials work well. These include wood chips, pine bark, or composted cotton seed hulls.
Each type of mulch has its advantages and disadvantages. Find a material that has the visual appearance that fits your style of gardening. They all provide the same basic benefit.
Summer mulching materials can be left in place year round. From time to time additional mulch will need to be added to keep the layer two to four inches deep.
