Gum in wash load

Question

How I can remove gum from a whole load of wash. My son had a pack of gum in his pocket, and the rest is history. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated?

Answer I suggest you follow the "ice and iron" instruction in MP663, Stain Removal from Washable Products. It may be tedious on a whole load of clothing, but is usually effective. .

Quilt with mildew

Question

I have several older quilts that have mildew on the face of the quilts. The patches that seem to be the most damaged are detailed with embroidery, painting and decals. I was wondering if there is any advise a way of removing mildew other than bleach?

AnswerBeach will probably take the color out of the embroidery and might make holes in the quilt. You could try laying it out in the sun and see if that helps.

Shoe storage

Question

Should I store shoes that have been cleaned of mold in the boxes they came in or plastic boxes that are available in discount stores?

Answer

Any fabric product stored in tight fitting plastic boxes is subject to mold and mildrew. Therefore, these are not recommended. If the storage is for a short time, it would probably be fine. If you have one of those packets that absorb moisture (they often come with shoes and purses), put it in the box with the shoes whether you use cardboard or plastic. The advantage of plalstic is you can see what's in it quickly.
