Whether you’re committed to helping hard-to-reach adults or teens prepare for the workplace or training employees in "soft skills" needed to succeed in work and life, this newly revised life skills curriculum can make your job easier -- and more fun!
Tackling the Tough Skills™: A Curriculum Building Skills for Work and Life (Revised Edition) offers a proven, innovative approach being used around the world to positively impact the lives of hard-to-reach or at-risk audiences. Research in 2008 shows the curriculum is also effective in teaching soft skills to hourly employees and managers in the workplace.
Published by MU Extension, the revised edition includes some modified and new activities; more diverse scenarios of people in various situations, including teens; a sample 12-week course agenda; and a cross-referenced list of activities and addenda pages. Educators have permission to photocopy 93 pages for overheads and handouts.
Tackling the Tough Skills™ is highly interactive and enjoyable for participants and educators. The curriculum uses adult learning principles to engage participants and to teach critical thinking skills through discussion, reflection, small group work and role plays. Dozens of original activities are adaptable for teen and adult audiences. An easy-to-use 3-ring binder makes the book convenient for educators. The book is brimming with more than 150 original, humorous illustrations that help to hook learners and keep them wanting to come back for more.
The author, Rosilee Trotta, LCSW, urban youth and family specialist, wrote the curriculum in 1998 to help people in the St. Louis area transition from welfare to work. The concept for the curriculum was developed by a team of MU Extension campus and field faculty and community partners, using an ecological model of family resiliency.
Since the curriculum was published in 2000 and marketed through the Internet, Tackling the Tough Skills™ has impacted adults and teens in all 50 states, Washington, DC, and more than a dozen countries.
This is a must-have resource for educators and a wide variety of leaders and trainers, including workplace and organizational educators, welfare-to-work program leaders, Adult Basic Education (ABE) and GED teachers, social service professionals, pregnant and parenting teen program leaders, youth workers, religious leaders, counselors, professionals working with adult and juvenile offenders, and all others seeking to positively impact the lives of at-risk adults and teens and employees in the workplace.
