Getting Into Dairying

Editor's note
The following abstract describes a publication that is only available for purchase. A link to ordering information is on this page.

Myron Bennett and Don Osburn
Department of Agricultural Economics

Is it possible to enter dairying and have a profitable future? This publication looks at the economic viability of beginning a 40-cow dairy operation with different debt loads, milk prices and production levels. By changing these figures, it is easier to see just which variables affect profits. The publication gives a detailed description of the scenarios used and several tables summarize the economic data collected.

Appendices itemize investments and assign costs per cow and costs per acre. Another appendix analyzes long-range budgeting and profitability for each of the three alternative plans presented.
