Summer annual broadleaf

A prostrate, fleshy, succulent summer annual that is able to tolerate poor, compacted soils and drought. Seedlings have cotyledons that are oblong, succulent and without hairs. Young leaves are maroon on the lower surface, opposite with each succeeding pair 90 degrees from the preceding pair. Mature plants have leaves that are alternate or opposite, 1/4 to 1-1/4 inches long, rounded at apex and narrowed to the base. Leaves are thick, succulent and fleshy, with smooth margins. Stems are succulent, smooth, prostrate, much-branched, purplish red or green and 4 to 20 inches long. Flowers are yellow with five petals that open only when sunny.
