Summer annual grass
A spreading summer annual that may have an erect growth habit or can also grow close to the ground with tips ascending. Texas panicum may reach as much as 32 inches tall and can root at the lower nodes. Seedlings have leaves that are covered with soft hairs on both surfaces. First leaves are relatively broad compared to most annual grasses. Leaves of mature plants range from 3 to 11 inches in length and may reach 20 mm in width. Leaves are covered with short, soft hairs on both surfaces. Auricles are not present and the ligule is membranous on the bottom and fringed with hairs on the top, from 1 to 2 mm long. Seedheads are a simple, narrow panicle that ranges from 2-3/4 to 10 inches in length.
