President's Message
Barbara Casady, President, Alpha Tau Chapter
The next two months will provide us all with opportunities to meet other professionals at Galaxy III, as well as to renew friendships with fellow MO coworkers at our Annual Conference. Attending professional development opportunities has always been a favorite activity of mine. I have met interesting Extension professionals from other states and learned about new programs they are offering.
We all get tired and bogged down from time to time. That’s why professional development offers a nice break from the routine and a change of scenery. Sure, we all come back with lots to do in the office; but, we’re more refreshed and can look at challenges and opportunities through new eyes.
For those of you attending Galaxy III, I encourage you to look at all of the professional workshops that are being offered by the various associations and attend at least one that is a completely new idea for you. Hearing new ideas and getting different angles for programming will help stimulate thinking and build enthusiasm. Also, while you are there, get out of the hotel! Be sure to see some sights in Indianapolis. That’s why we travel to new places. All hotel rooms look pretty much alike; don’t be trapped inside the entire time! Explore!
Our own MO Annual Conference, in October, will be another opportunity to renew friendships and meet new people. The annual conference committee has put together some great workshops and speakers. One change from previous conferences is that the ESP Annual Meeting will be the same day the Retirees are at the conference – October 28. I encourage all of you who are retirees to attend the ESP meeting, too. We always look forward to seeing all of our membership! As in previous years, we will celebrate and market ESP to all MU Extension employees with an ice cream break at 3:00 on October 28 and the ESP Annual Meeting will be held from 5:30 – 6:30 on the same day.
Have a great fall season and take in the scenery, wherever you may travel! The new ESP key logo as seen above was introduced at the Galaxy III Conference in September. Working with a professional marketing firm, the 2008 National ESP Marketing Committee and National ESP Board introduced the new logo, tagline and image. This newsletter carries the new ESP image which projects ESP as an outstanding professional development organization for all Extension professionals.
The National ESP Board is looking forward to Chapters using the new logo as they reach out to current membership and the new generation of Extension professionals. The National ESP Board realizes some ESP members will continue to wear their traditional logo pin because it has great meaning to them and they can certainly wear it with pride. In the future more ESP items will be developed using the new logo and taglines.
JCEP
2009– Ethics in Today’s Extension World
Mary Anne Patten, MO Alpha Tau President Elect
The Central Region and Western Region JCEP Conference met in Del Mar, CA February 22-24. Del Mar is just north of San Diego and a wonderful location for a late winter conference. Ethics in Today’s Extension World was the theme of this year’s conference. Dr. Albert C. Pierce, Professor of Ethics and National Security at the National Defense University presented the two day workshop.
Dr. Pierce discussed the ethical challenges for leaders and leadership development. He began with five methods of "How Leaders Can Lead People Astray". The next morning he presented the concepts of ethics and challenged the audience to incorporate these concepts into our extension programming. Dr. Pierce used a model of 4-3-2-1 for his concepts of ethics:
4 Stages -- Moral Awareness, Moral Reasoning, Moral Courage, Moral Effectiveness
3 Questions -- What is the Act? What are its consequences? What kind of person am I?
2 Judgments -- Responsibility (Credit/Blame)
-- Accountability (Reward/Punishment)
1 Goal – Integrity
JCEP participants also heard a videotaped presentation from Dr. Paul Coreil, ECOP Chair. He outlined the 2009 ECOP Goals and Strategic Opportunities for Cooperative Extension. Delegates also attended their association meetings.
Other delegates from Missouri attending the JCEP Conference were: Mark Stillwell, ESP NC Regional Vice President; Matt Herring, NACAA; Meg Sage Mach, NAE4-HA; Becky Simpson, NAE4-HA; Mark Stewart, NACAA; Lisa Wallace, NEAFCS.
