2008 JCEP Happenings
Beverly Maltsberger, MO Alpha Tau, President

The 2008 JCEP meeting in San Diego was a nice break from the ice and snow of northwest Missouri. We met in San Diego to participate in a joint meeting between the Western Region and the Central Region. It was good to meet and share ideas with ESP colleagues from that region. Previously there were four regional meetings; but, this year that was condensed down to two meetings.

There were two major workshops presented to the entire group. The first centered on recognizing the differences among the four categories of generations and understanding their interests, values, communication styles, and learning approaches. It was very enlightening. It may also explain why we see more turnovers in younger extension staff today than in previous years. The information suggests that spending an entire career in only one profession is not the goal of the “Y Generation” of today. Gen Y’s are optimistic, value education, embrace diversity and are ambitious. They focus on achievement and are tenacious. Technology is a major part of their lives and they prefer older people as mentors.

The second workshop discussed technology. It is interesting to note how fast this field is changing. Communicating through Blogs and Wiki’s are the learning and communicating styles that appeal to the Gen Y’s. They are “texters” and mulit-taskers. They have grown up with technology and it is an integral part of their lives. We must find ways to increase our use of technology in order to keep up with today’s fast paced world

Notes to the Membership
Beverly Maltsberger, MO Alpha Tau, President

As this year’s president of MO ESP, I encourage you to share your ideas or concerns about our chapter. We want to be the very best chapter possible. This will happen only if the membership is involved and participating in the activities of the chapter. National ESP offers mini-grants to help fund special professional development events for chapters; so if you have a good idea, please share it!

We’ve Got the Money to Help You Live. And Learn.
Lisa Wallace, Loan and Fellowship Committee Chairman

Live.  And Learn.  Our slogan encourages continued learning.  And, thanks to the Extension Loan and Fellowship Fund, we have money to help us continue learning too.  A simple application and a plan stand between you and a new learning experience.  You can receive as much as $1000 for educational endeavors.

Who’s Eligible?  You must be currently employed as a university faculty or professional staff member. And, you must have two years of consecutive employment with the University of Missouri or Lincoln University.  Priority is given to first-time applicants. Applications must be submitted prior to the professional development experience.

How much is Awarded?  Up to $1,000 per award will be granted.  The total amount individuals may receive during their tenure with the University is $1,500.  Funds should offset expenses not covered through other sources.  Applicants must submit a budget identifying anticipated expenditures and other sources of financial support, including personal contributions.  Awards will not exceed actual expenses.  The number of awards granted will depend on the availability of funds in the Extension Loan and Fellowship Fund.

What’s the Application and Selection Process?  Only e-mail applications are accepted.  Complete the application and send it to your supervisor, who will forward it to the committee. Applications are reviewed monthly.  To be considered in a given month, applications must be received by the first.  Individuals selected to receive fellowships will be notified within 45 days.

Leading Change for a Healthy Organization
ESP Galaxy III Pre-Conference Workshop, Monday, September 15, 2008

"Leading Change for a Healthy Organization" is the theme for the ESP sponsored pre-conference scheduled for Monday, September 15, in Indianapolis. The keynote speaker is Kathleen Lingle who leads Alliance for Work-Life Progress (AWLP), a national center of work-life expertise that defines and recognizes innovation, best practices and provides global thought leadership. AWLP advances work-life effectiveness as a high-performance business strategy that integrates work, family and community.

Attendees will be exposed to a new, integrative model for total rewards strategy that serves as a 21st century roadmap for leaders responsible for attracting, retaining and motivating a workforce in today's work environment. She will conclude by describing what it takes to make this highly profitable journey, whether you are a lone practitioner, leader of an enterprise or member of a team. Case studies will be provided that show how a variety of employers across industry sectors have generated significantly better business outcomes than their peer group by integrating work-life effectiveness into their overall people strategy.

Prior to the workshop, registered participants will complete a brief survey tool to help set the stage for an effective learning experience and more closely tailor the presentation to the audience's specific needs.

Cost of this outstanding workshop will be $100 per participant. The workshop is to be held on Monday, September 15, and will begin at 8:30 a.m., includes lunch and concludes at 3:00 p.m. Registration information, as well as additional conference information, will be available on the ESP website around April 1, 2008.

This workshop is open to Extension personnel across all disciplines, county and regional directors, human resource and professional development personnel and Extension administrators. This workshop is sponsored by the ESP Professional Development Committee.
