Renew Your Professional Batteries!
Bev
Maltsberger, President, Alpha Tau Chapter
The next two months will provide us all with opportunities to meet other professionals at Galaxy III, as well as to renew friendships with fellow MO coworkers at our Annual Conference. Attending professional development opportunities has always been a favorite activity of mine. I have met interesting Extension professionals from other states and learned about new programs they are offering.
We all get tired and bogged down from time to time. That’s why professional development offers a nice break from the routine and a change of scenery. Sure, we all come back with lots to do in the office; but, we’re more refreshed and can look at challenges and opportunities through new eyes.
For those of you attending Galaxy III, I encourage you to look at all of the professional workshops that are being offered by the various associations and attend at least one that is a completely new idea for you. Hearing new ideas and getting different angles for programming will help stimulate thinking and build enthusiasm. Also, while you are there, get out of the hotel! Be sure to see some sights in Indianapolis. That’s why we travel to new places. All hotel rooms look pretty much alike; don’t be trapped inside the entire time! Explore!
Our own MO Annual Conference, in October, will be another opportunity to renew friendships and meet new people. The annual conference committee has put together some great workshops and speakers. One change from previous conferences is that the ESP Annual Meeting will be the same day the Retirees are at the conference – October 28. I encourage all of you who are retirees to attend the ESP meeting, too. We always look forward to seeing all of our membership! As in previous years, we will celebrate and market ESP to all MU Extension employees with an ice cream break at 3:00 on October 28 and the ESP Annual Meeting will be held from 5:30 – 6:30 on the same day.
Have a great fall season and take in the scenery, wherever you may travel!

The 110% Challenge
Sandra
McKinnon, Membership Committee Chair
Bob Schultheis, Treasurer
Are you up for a challenge? Active members – it is time to get, well…active. (No push-ups or sit-ups required). National ESP has challenged us to increase our membership by 10%. But our chapter can do one better and shoot for 110%. We value our current members and want to see 100% of you renew before extension’s annual conference. And working together, each member can help invite new colleagues to join our ranks to meet the 10% part of the challenge. New members keep our organization strong. Currently we have 72 active members so that means we are seeking no less than 8.
E-mails of invitation have been sent to several eligible colleagues in each region. As a member, your name was in the cc: field. Potential members will look to you for answers if they have questions.
Personal contact is the most effective way to garner new prospects. Reflect on why you became a member – it is likely because an ESP member invited you to join.
When a colleague asks you “what’s in it for me?” consider sharing these benefits:
Epsilon Sigma Phi is the only professional Extension organization that focuses on Extension as a profession
ESP is one of the oldest (75+ years) and is the largest organization of Extension Professionals (6500 members strong)
Our members are united across disciplines and program areas. We learn from sharing experiences and expertise.
Recognition through numerous awards
Scholarships and grants
Leadership workshops and conferences to increase professional value
ESP builds political support with decision makers on issues affecting employee benefits and legislation affecting Extension
Alpha Tau also has an active membership committee that is contacting colleagues in their area. They will be making recruiting and renewal announcements at regional meetings. A chapter hoorah for the efforts of Van Ayers, Donna Clavin, Karisha Devlin, Annette FitzGerald, Candance Gabel, Rick Mammen, Mark Stewart, Georgia Stuart-Simmons, and Rebecca Travnichek.
To join or renew, print out and complete the application/renewal form in the member brochure available on the chapter website at http://extension.missouri.edu/esp. Send it to Bob Schultheis, ESP Treasurer, Webster County Extension Center, 800 S. Marshall St., Marshfield, MO 65706. Or you may use the UMEA form at http://extension.missouri.edu/umea/join.htm to submit all your dues on just one check. ESP initiation will be held October 28 during Extension Annual Conference in Columbia. Please plan to attend and welcome new members among us.
