There’s Gold Out There
by Nancy Flood, President

The national ESP conference in Colorado Springs was a perfect opportunity to mine gold --- Extension gold.  Those nuggets came from connections with Extension colleagues from across the country; workshops with meaning for our professional and personal improvement; a setting that fostered relaxation; and some outstanding keynote speakers. One, Dr. Evan Vlachos from Colorado State University, spoke to us about futuring for Extension.  Some of his nuggets included:

“Are we going to sit back and watch the future happen or influence it?”
“The trouble with our times is that the future is not what it used to be.”
“Those who live by the crystal ball are bound to eat ground glass.”
“It is better to be approximately late than entirely wrong.”
“A lot of books on the back of a donkey do not make a wise ass.”
“Why do tornadoes prefer trailer courts?”
“Looking for the solution without listening to the problem is working in the dark.”

As you ponder these quotes, think about where we’re going in University of Missouri Extension.  Dr. Vlachos challenged us, during this age of complexity, to help people make wise decisions.  Making choices --- an everyday occurrence.  Are we preparing our publics to make wise choices?

Take Advantage of Professional Development Opportunities
by Mark Stillwell, President-Elect

Joint Council of Extension Professionals (JCEP) Regional Professional Development and Leadership Program is February 28-March 2, 2006, St. Louis, MO. Registration information for the JCEP Regional Workshops will be coming out in the near future.  Watch the JCEP website for more information at http://www.jcep.org

This year’s theme is "Extension's Changing Climate".  With a shifting climate for funding and personnel, Cooperative Extension professionals must be able to weather the climate by developing effective relationships with stakeholder advisory groups.  The regional workshops are for any chapter member but especially important for the chapter leadership.  The ESP emphasis this year will be on promoting the benefits of ESP to potential and current members.  It is a great opportunity to interact with other chapters and gain new ideas for chapter action.  Watch the ESP website at http://espnational.org for registration information.

Public Issues Leadership Development (PILD) Conference is April 24 - 27, 2006, Marriott Crystal City, Arlington, Virginia. Conference Highlights: Learn what makes Washington tick…and how to use this new understanding of the “big picture” to improve your Extension programs; Learn about program and public issues partnerships with USDA-CSREES, federal agencies, and non-profits. Build skills to effectively communicate with public decision makers. Spend a “day on the Hill” with members of Congress and staff and discuss the impact of your Extension program on their constituency. More information is available at http://espnational.org/pild/pild06b.htm

Text Box: National Epsilon Sigma Phi is sponsoring a leadership development opportunity for all Extension professionals!  The new web-based seminar series entitled “Reflections on Extension Leadership” will be offered this fall and winter.  Join your colleagues across the country as they share their perspectives, experiences, and insights on leadership.  For more information and to enroll, visit the ESP website at:  http://www.espnational.org

National ESP meeting in Colorado was attended by Rex Ricketts, Bev Coberly and Nancy Flood. They were very impressed with the meeting, speakers, etc., and encouraged all to participate in the future.  The next meeting is in Annapolis, MD, in November 2006.

Alpha Tau Chapter Goals for 2006

At the November 21, 2005 ESP Board teleconference President Nancy Flood challenged all board members to help accomplish four goals for 2006:  sponsor a professional development experience open to ESP and non-ESP members; plan an activity to celebrate ESP’s75th anniversary; build the Loan and Fellowship Fund; and establish a new Global Relations committee that connects to national ESP.  Look for more information on these goals in future newsletters.
