President's Message
by Dr. Jo Turner, President
How many times during your career have you pondered selecting the right gift to honor a colleague’s retirement? It is very difficult to find the right token of respect, appreciation and honor.
That is the dilemma that we face this fall as Dr. Tom Henderson, Interim Director and Vice Provost for Extension prepares for his second retirement (or re-retirement, as some have called it!) from University of Missouri Extension. All of us owe a debt of gratitude to Tom for his dedication and leadership, particularly during his most recent service as Interim Director.
In recognition of this, the Alpha Tau chapter of Epsilon Sigma Phi, Extension honorary society, is requesting contributions to the Missouri Extension Loan and Fellowship Fund in Tom’s honor. This University of Missouri endowment fund was established in 1964 to support ongoing educational opportunities for Extension specialists. Over the years, the fund has provided financial assistance to Extension professionals to help make them better educators. Additional information about the fund and its uses is available on line at http://outreach.missouri.edu/staff/awards/fellowship.html
Tax deductible contributions should be made payable to University of Missouri Extension Loan and Fellowship Fund, and noted as “Henderson recognition.” Send your check to: University of Missouri Extension, c/o Callie Glascock, 806 Clark Hall, Columbia, MO 65211.
We hope you will join us in honoring Tom and in growing the Extension Loan and Fellowship Fund. What better way to express our thanks to Tom and our commitment to our Extension profession and ideals?
Congratulations to ESP Award

Cooler Weather – New Prospects
by Jim Ollar, Life Member Chair
Hallelujah the drought has ended. Is it not amazing how rapidly Mother Nature works to repair the ravages of extreme weather? Am more than happy to get back on the mower after a couple months off. While corn farmers in many parts of Missouri, and beyond, have suffered irreparably, the late summer rains are making soybeans viable and saving fall and winter hay and pastures (and lawns).
I can report that fishing spring-fed streams and strolling watered golf courses continues even during very dry weather. Good water management as practiced by forward looking golf course designers and superintendents provides sites where one can, for a few hours, forget a drought-browned landscape.
Fall brings the annual round of Extension retiree gatherings. Consider attending the gathering of your choice. Dates and locations are listed at the beginning of the newsletter. The previously announced date of the Central MO. meeting has been changed to avoid conflict with Annual Conference.
Speaking of Annual Conference, registration forms have been mailed. Once again, John Parker has arranged a most informative and entertaining afternoon session for retirees. Hope to see you there.
Have a great fall. Meet some new folks. Keep moving. Help yourself while helping your neighbor.

Monies Available…FREE!
by Pat
Snodgrass, Loan and Fellowship Chair
Any university faculty or professional staff member with two years of consecutive employment with UM or LU is eligible to apply for professional development monies from the Extension Loan and Fellowship Fund. This fund has been established decades ago by Epsilon Sigma Phi members. The total amount individuals may receive during their tenure is $1,500. Funds should offset expenses not covered through other sources. Applications for the monies are reviewed monthly. The application form can be found at http://outreach.missouri.edu/staff/awards/fellowship.html or on the Epsilon Sigma Phi website at http://extension.missouri.edu/esp. Consider the Loan and Fellowship Fund when thinking about national meeting expenses, a specialized training or seminar or advanced degree work.
You can also honor or memorialize a colleague with a donation to the Fund. Persons honored are added to a plaque. Plaques are displayed for all of us to remember the friendship and valuable contributions of a fellow colleague.
