President's Message
by Karla Spencer, ESP President

It seems like a long time since our whirlwind annual conference. Many staff received awards and recognition during the first annual conference where all faculty and staff were present. In all the activity, some of you may not have renewed your membership with Epsilon Sigma Phi. Our chapter needs your membership to have strength. Won't you consider renewing?

There were several items of note from the recently held National Meeting in Indianapolis. The proposal to increase national dues by $10 passed, and will become effective in 2001. Coupled with that dues increase, life membership dues will also increase. Life member dues are currently $100, and will move to $150 in 2001. With a number of retirements coming this year, now would be a good time to pay your life member dues before the increase goes into effect.

The Alpha Tau Chapter is fortunate to have an active, interested board of directors and committee chairs. Brenda Procter recently accepted the Awards Committee chair position, and Joan Hickman accepted Professional Development responsibilities. Rex Ricketts has taken on the very important task of Membership Committee chair. We appreciate our colleagues for being willing to assist us in three very important aspects of our chapter's work.

We have a web page, thanks to Bob Schultheis, Secretary, to be very proud of. This is just one of the highlights of our Missouri Chapter that Gail Carlson, President-Elect, will be sharing at the regional leadership workshop.

The mission of Epsilon Sigma Phi is to develop leadership capacity and celebrate excellence. There are many benefits to membership. As members we have access to scholarships, loans and grants. We have an opportunity to network across disciplines, state lines, and organizations. ESP also offers professional development opportunities through workshops, satellite downlinks, and conferences. Help the board by providing input and getting involved. We invite you to join us today!

Membership Renewal
by Rex Ricketts, Membership Chair

In case you failed to renew your membership, which several people probably did because of the short annual conference and its hectic pace, we still need and want you. Send your $31 to Thomas Henderson, Treasurer, 108 Whitten Hall, Columbia, Missouri. The chapter must submit dues to the national office by March 1, so if you didn’t pay your dues at annual conference and you plan to renew do so as soon as possible.

You can also help us by talking to a colleague about Epsilon Sigma Phi and the benefits that it affords extension employees in professional improvement and support. Eligibility for membership comes after 5 years of employment. First year members pay only $36.00.

ESP Website Promotes Communication
by Bob Schultheis, ESP Secretary

Better communication among members is a major goal of the Missouri Epsilon Sigma Phi website at http://outreach.missouri.edu/esp

Newsletters and minutes of board meetings and annual meetings are posted to make it easier for members to see what the organization is doing and to "find their niche" in helping make it better. Click on the "Members" button to get a membership application form or see who the ESP contacts are for your region. Check out the "Benefits" button to see what professional development opportunities and financial assistance await you as a member.

If you have information to add that would benefit all members, please provide it in HTML or Word97 format by e-mailing me at schultheisr@missouri.edu
