In attendance: Janet LaFon, Joe Koenen, Mark Stillwell, Mary Anne Patten, Sandra McKinnon, Wilma Jean Lower, Pat Snodgrass, Bob Schultheis, Barb Casady
The meeting started at 1:01 p.m. with a welcome.
Minutes from the September 8, 2008 Board Meeting and the Annual meeting held on October 8, 2008 were read via link to the ESP website. Pat Snodgrass moved and Mary Anne Patten second the approval of the minutes.
Mark Stillwell gave an update from National ESP:
o Membership is down a bit nationwide, national ESP is watching this number closely and trying to determine if this is because of the national economy or other factors;
o Mark is chairing the national ESP Endowment campaign. They have created a new brochure and information in the newsletter to help promote contributing to the endowment. A report from the financial advisor shows that because of wise investing the ESP endowment is down only about 10%, as compared to many other endowments which are showing a loss of 25% to 30%.
Treasurer’s Report - Bob reported that there are currently 69 members (3 new, 66 renewed) and 93 Life members. He reported:
o $560.98 in the regular checking account
o $10,577.45 in the commercial money market account
o There are no outstanding deposits
o A check for $2,735 is outstanding to national ESP for the 2009 dues
o Total operating funds available $8,403.43
2009 Budget
o Bob presented the 2009 draft budget. Discussion was held.
o A motion was made by Pat Snodgrass and seconded by Joe Koenen to increase the cap on the Professional Development line item to $2,500 so there are enough dollars to support attendance of the President-elect at JCEP, PILD (if because of MU Extension budget constraints there is no additional support from Dr. Ouart) and to support members interested in attending the National ESP Conference. It passed.
o A motion was made to accept the 2009 budget as presented and with the change to the Professional Development line. Moved by Joe Koenen and seconded by Mary Anne Patton. It passed.
Committee Reports
o Courtesy and Memorials – Wilma Jean Lower – reported there were two Extension professionals who had passed away since October 15, 2008 the time of Annual Conference
§ Dorothy Grafton and Ernest “Wayne” Gerber
o Global Issues – no report
o Life Members – Spring retiree meetings have been arranged in seven locations around the state. John Parker is giving lead to these meetings.
o Loan and Fellowship – Lisa Wallace is giving leadership to the statewide MU Extension Loan and Fellowship Fund and Awards Committee. She would like ESP to select a new chair of the Loan and Fellowship committee, Barb Casady will work on finding a new chairperson.
o Membership – Sandra McKinnon reported that there are 89 members.
o Professional Development – Pat Snodgrass reported on the national ESP professional development committee’s plan of work. It is located on the national ESP website.
o Public Issues – Sandy Stegall sent a report – Legislative Day will be April 22. Registration for Legislative Day and the Alumni Alliance Banquet that will be held on April 21 is on the UMEA website. There are changes in this year’s Legislative Day
§ Box lunches will cost $10.00
§ There will be no displays
§ The afternoon council meeting (for faculty, staff) will begin a half-hour earlier at 1:30 p.m.
o Recognition and Awards – Joe K. reported that the awards deadline would be in August. He will submit our 2008 Friend of Extension award winner – Mike “Pee Wee” Forck for national ESP consideration. The due date for this submission is March 1.
Old Business
o Space has been designated for ESP historical records in Room 1, Whitten Hall.
New Business
o Newsletter - Mary Anne asked that newsletter articles be sent to her via email by March 2. For the summer newsletter the due date for articles in May 29.
o Missouri Galaxy – Barb reported that the Presidents of MU Extension Professional Associations are serving on the planning committee for the Missouri Extension Galaxy. Karisha Devlin is serving as chair.
§ Dates are November 10 – 11, 2009
§ Location is Windermere
§ ESP will again host the ice cream social. It will be held on Tues., November 10 in the mid-afternoon
§ The ESP annual mtg will be held on Wed. November 11 at 7:30 during breakfast
§ Barb asked the group to send suggestions for speakers or workshops to Karisha or to Barb
§ Barb asked Wilma Jean if there was anything that would encourage retirees to attend. Wilma Jean will give it more thought and the question will be asked at the upcoming spring retiree meetings.
Announcements
o Ethics in Today/s Extension World, Tuesday, February 10, 1-2 p.m. central time. Registration deadline in 2/5/09 cost is $25.00 Sandra McKinnon is registered.
o February 27 is the deadline for submitting ESP National Conference concurrent session proposals
o ESP National Meeting will be September 13-16 in Fargo N.D.
