Epsilon Sigma Phi Annual Meeting
 Tuesday, October 28, 2008

Call to Order:  By President Bev Maltsberger at 5:40 p.m.

Minutes from last meeting:  Approved as posted on Web

Treasurer’s Report: (Bob Schultheis)
Checking balance = $549.11
Money Market = $7,634.32
Total in accounts =   $8,183.43  Outstanding deposits $720.00    Outstanding checks: $12.50   Bob said people have done a good job of getting meeting costs covered and staying well within the budget. Treasurer’s report approved.

Committee Reports:

Recognition and Awards:  Joe Koenen said no applications were turned in this year for individual or team awards.  He encouraged applications for next year.

Membership: Sandra McKinnon named committee members and said she is making contacts with members who haven’t renewed memberships.  SC Region was recognized for renewing all members (4).  The goal of getting a 10% increase in membership, 8 new members, was not met.  ESP brochures are available for recruitment purposes.  Sandra is serving on the ESP national Recruitment and Retention Committee.  New members initiated were: Melinda Adams, Meg Sage Mach, BJ Eavy, and Kimberly Keller.

Professional Development: Pat Snodgrass mentioned that several good national webinars have been available. Also, mini-grants are available for special workshops from national.  If members have ideas for such grants, contact Pat.

Loan and Fellowship: Lisa Wallace reminded members that employees may apply for Extension fellowships for $1,000 for one event or $1,500 during their employment tenure for Professional meetings.  See: http://extension.missouri.edu/staff/awards/fellowship.html
Money is available ($150,000 in corpus).  The Loan and Fellowship fund recently received a $10,000 gift from retiree Don Broermann. 

Life Member: Tom Henderson (no report)

Courtesy & Memorials: Wilma Jean Lower was not present but wrote a memorial service that was performed by Barb Casady, honoring deceased members.

Nominations: Mark Stillwell said nominations were made, and officers were installed later in the meeting. Mark also mentioned that the ESP Friend of Extension award at annual conference was going to Mike “Pee Wee” Forck, Cole County commissioner, who was instrumental in getting a new extension center built and paid off in 10 years.  The center was dedicated in 1995.

Global: Mary Leuci (no report)

Public Issues: Sandy Stegall announced that the 2009 Legislative Day will be Wednesday, April 22, with the recognition banquet on the evening of April 21. A group will again participate in the PILD Conference in Washington, D.C., April 27-29. 

President’s Remarks: Bev Maltsberger expressed her appreciation for having the opportunity to serve in the President’s capacity.  She thanked Barb Casady for producing and distributing the electronic newsletter.  She said that Mark, Barb and she went to JCEP in San Diego and visited with retiree Don Broermann.  Barb represented ESP at PILD in April 2008. 

She thanked Dr. Ouart for his support of 40-plus people at Galaxy in Indianapolis in September, including a nice dinner one evening.  Kathy Dothage was recognized at Galaxy as outgoing president of NEAFCS with a reception funded by Dr. Ouart’s office.  There were 122 workshops at Galaxy; Bev was a presenter.  Bev also was honored with the Chapter of Merit Platinum Award.  Sandra received a Certificate of Achievement for work with the local membership committee – 72 active members, 6 new members and 95 life members.  A new key symbol was unveiled for ESP.  Mark is serving as the North Central Region Director for ESP and chairs the Resource Development and Management Committee.  Reminder:  Life members who travel to a national ESP meeting can receive $100 toward their travel expenses, paid by national.

New Officers Installed:

Bev turned over the gavel to Barb and said: “Our role in ESP is to build human capital and improve the image of cooperative extension.”
