Vice Presidents's Report

More than 160 members from across the country converged on Fargo, ND for the 2009 ESP National Meeting. We were greeted with warm weather and great hospitality.  Mary Anne Patten and I represented MU Extension’s Alpha Tau chapter.

One of the highlights of this year’s meeting was Dr. James LeRoy Lindquist’s recognition and presentation as the Distinguished Service Ruby Award. The Ruby Award, as it is more commonly referred to, is the highest honor bestowed on a member of ESP.  Many of you may know Jim as a colleague and friend from Kansas State University Research and Extension. Jim began his career as a county agent and rose through the organization serving in various administrative posts until retiring last July as Assistant Extension Director and Director of Field Operations.

Linda Cook, ESP Executive Director, gave up the reins on the national office retiring at the national meeting. Bob Ohlensehlen replaces Linda in this important leadership role. You can already see the impact of Bob’s leadership with the new web page. http://espnational.org/

Silent and live auction and individual donation added more than $12,000 to the ESP endowed development fund.  The development fund currently has more than $350,000 in assets. Income from the fund supports mini-grants and scholarships to support member’s professional development. Check out the calendar and deadlines on our web page.

I continue to serve as NC Vice President for the coming year. Applications are due January 1, 2010 for the next NC VP. Please let me know if you are interested in serving in this important leadership role.  The National 2nd Vice President will be selecting from the NC Region next year. Now is the time to be considering serving in a position which will lead to the National President two years later. Nominations and applications are due July 1, 2010.

Be sure to mark October 12-15 on your calendar and plan to attend the 2010 National Conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. It’s sure to be an outstanding conference!
