It has been said that if communities are to create a high quality of life
both locally and globally they must invest in the development of their
people. A very important and
basic part of this development is community education designed to build
the capacities of people as involved citizens and effective leaders.
The Youth Leadership Academy is intended to provide civic education to foster in youth an understanding of the processes of community decision making; to increase knowledge of the community, its structures, history, conditions and issues; and to develop such skills as problem solving, working with groups, enhancing cooperation, and dealing with conflict. David Mathews of the Kettering Foundation wrote, “In a word, effective communities appear to be different, not because of economic or demographic or regional factors, but because they are simply better educated as a community. That is, they are good at educating the whole community in the community’s business.” In providing education to youth in the area of community leadership we will be better preparing them to become productive and contributing members of their community and society in general.
