Dent               Feeding and Storing Ethanol Co-Products to Beef Cattle

2009 Field Day Highlights 4-H Newsletter

Over 125 cattlemen and livestock producers gathered for a Field Day at Barnitz Farms, near Lake Spring, Mo., on Saturday January 17, 2009 to learn more about accessing, storing, and feeding distillers grains, an ethanol co-product high in protein, energy and phosphorous.

“The weather cooperated, and we had an excellent turnout, with some folks coming from as far as 150 miles away to attend.  I think there’s a good deal of interest in using ethanol co-products such as distillers grains, and this field day provided a great opportunity to learn how these products could be fed and stored”, said Ted Cunningham, MU Extension Livestock Specialist.

The field day featured a tour of storage facilities, feeding equipment and a cattle backgrounding lot where ethanol co-products are currently being used and evaluated.  The field day was sponsored by University of Missouri Extension, South Ozarks Premier Beef Marketers, LLC, and the Missouri Corn Growers Association.   Lunch was provided by the Missouri Corn Merchandising Council and was prepared by the Dent County Cattlemen.
