RACS needs your help!

At this time of year, lots of clubs are looking for a way to give back to our community.  The Rape & Abuse Crisis Service serves residents of Cole and Osage county as well as surrounding counties.  They are looking for volunteers in several areas.  If you or your club is interested or would like more information, call Pam at 634-8346, ext. 7.

- Volunteer to pick up food delivered to the warehouse in JC by Central MO Food Bank, usually the first & third Friday of each month at 11:00am.  This usually takes about an hour.

- JCPS no longer has a grant to offer tutoring services to our children in the shelter. We could occasionally use someone to help out in this way.

- Provide childcare occasionally during our Domestic Violence Support Group on Thursday night from 6:15pm-8:15pm.

- Help with sorting, processing, and placement of donations to our shelter. This is general on Tuesdays, and works best with pairs of people volunteering together.

- We are currently accepting donations on Tuesdays from 10:00am-6:00pm.  We must ask that anyone wishing to bring donations, call first, even if you’ve brought things recently. Our needs change with some frequency, and sometimes safety issues force us to cancel a donation day.

Say Thanks

This is a good program.

This is great from XEROX

If you go to this web site,  www.LetsSayThanks.com you can pick out  a thank you card and Xerox will print it and it will be sent to a  soldier that is currently serving in Iraq.  You can't pick out who gets it, but it will go to a member of the armed services.

How AMAZING it would be if we could get everyone we know to send one!!!  It is FREE and it only takes a second.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if the soldiers received a bunch of these? Whether you are for or against the war, our soldiers over there need to know we are behind them.

This takes just 10 seconds and it’s a wonderful way to say thank you. Please take the time and please take the time to pass it on for others to do.

We can never say enough thank you's.

Thanks for taking to time to support our military!

Respectfully,

DECEMBER PROJECT LEADER Tips

Diana Duncan

December is the season of giving and fellowship.  The Missouri 4-H program is very appreciative of your commitment to sharing your skills and knowledge with the 4-H members in your project areas.  Your caring approach is equipping members with wonderful project and life skills that they will use in their future.  We are excited to work with you and know the members are excited to get started on their project work!

Project meeting outline

Here is a suggested project meeting plan. Following this plan will help you envision the direction you hope to take. Involve members in the planning process as much as possible and keep their goals in mind as you plan each meeting. Work with 4-H members at the end of your project to review goals, evaluate their progress and help them learn from the experience.

· Interest getter (15-20 minutes) - Ideas include identification quizzes, judging contests, relay skill games, films or slides, a tour of the host member’s project and guest speakers.

 · Skill session (30-50 minutes) - The majority of time spent in most meetings should be spent doing — practicing a job or skill. Be sure to include the elements of experience, sharing, processing, generalizing and applying in your session.

 · Discussion (15-20 minutes) - Use this time for questions and answers, coming events, comments on presentations given and assigned, and members’ reports on project problems.

· Demonstration (10 minutes) - Ask one member to give a demonstration at each meeting. (This gives 4-H'ers a chance to develop and practice demonstrations that will be given at 4-H club meetings and Achievement Day.)

 · Record keeping (10-15 minutes) - Allow time for members to work on calendars and 4-H Project Record, Y620.

 · Summary and assignments (10-20 minutes) - Have members summarize the day’s meeting. Plan for the next meeting — where, when and what to bring.

 · Refreshments and recreation - Recreation and refreshments are optional, but these activities help to keep the members’ interest. Youth leaders can plan and organize this portion of the meeting.

Risk Management:

When working with youth and adults accidents may occur.   There are a few things mentioned below that you should have handy in the event you have this type of a situation.

 · First Aid Kit -  you can make one of your own with the use of LG638

 · Insurance policy number – you can get this from our club leader

 · Accident report – LG811

 · Emergency contact numbers – both for local officials and parents of the members

4-H MOVE ACROSS MISSOURI - 2010 EDITION!

Diana Duncan

The holiday season is just around the corner, a time for family, friends and reflection.  Don’t forget to take time to enjoy your family and club during the holidays.  The hard work and dedication you have provided to the club leadership is greatly appreciated.  As you work with the club officer team to prepare for the December club meeting the list of things below is something for you to consider.

Before the end of the December:

1.      Meet deadlines for returning enrollment forms and fees, insurance fees and applications to the local University of Missouri Extension Center.

2.      Program booklets for the year created/completed and club program plans are distributed to families and volunteers.  Please also send a copy to the Extension Office.

3.      Announce/distribute project leader training resources.

4.      Distribute curriculum, literature and Project Leader information.

5.      Confirm “recognized” volunteer positions related to project groups and work with other volunteers in the club to complete the process.

6.      Make any necessary corrections to enrollment with the youth staff.  Double-check that all enrollment fees have been turned in to extension office.

7.      Discuss Teen Conference and Kansas City Global Conference [application deadlines coming up soon].

8.      Distribute club program plans or monthly agendas for the year.  Send a copy to the extension center.

9.      Enjoy the Holiday party.  Have fun!  Plan activities to encourage all family members to participate - - not just the 4-H members.  Be aware of family budgets if planning a gift exchange.

10.  Complete service project, this month December is a great month for giving.

11.  Take time to check up on your club’s operation.

·      Are the officers really taking charge of the meetings?

·      Are members making motions properly?

·      Is the business portion of the meeting getting over in about 20 minutes?

·      If not, is it because a committee should have met to make recommendations prior to the meetings?

·      Are games and songs being included so that members are having fun at the meetings?

·      Is the club reporter turning in meeting report cards to the extension center and submitting news items to the local paper?

12.  Look at your club’s goals and see how far the group has moved toward completion.

4-H MOVE ACROSS MISSOURI - 2010 EDITION!

Alison Copeland

Get ready to continue 4-H Move Across Missouri (MOVE)!  MOVE promotes physical activity and encourages youths to engage in a broad range of activities such as walking, biking, running, swimming, dance, taekwondo, gardening and more.

Enrollment for new and re-enrollment for current MOVErs begins January 1.  Please note that if you are currently enrolled in MOVE you must re-enroll on January 1 or after in order to be a part of the 2010 program.  If you do not re-enroll on January 1 or after your efforts will not be counted in 2010.

Monthly MOVEment Activity

Youth, families, clubs, afterschool groups and others can have fun while being physically active.

Power Jumping

Materials:

    · 6 to 8 feet of large bubble wrap

    · Clothespins (one for each child)

    · Measuring tape

    · Marker

Ask youth how far they can jump. Lay out a long strip of bubble wrap (preferably the large bubble kind) and secure to the floor. Youth stand at the end with both feet together. They swing their arms back and jump forward as far as possible. Listen to the bubbles pop! Fasten a clothespin with each participant’s name to the side of the bubble wrap where the heels landed. Ask youth what they can do to improve their jump (i.e., bend knees more, push harder off the toes, etc.). Use the measuring tape to measure the distance.

Missouri Livestock Symposium Features Big Names in Beef Cattle Industry

The Missouri Livestock Symposium has announced its lineup of speakers for this year’s Beef Cattle Section, and according to Symposium Chair Garry L. Mathes, the program includes several “big hitters.”  The lineup includes Lee Leachman, Leachman Cattle of Colorado, who will give two talks.  In the first talk Leachman will offer “2010’s Top Profit Tips”; his second talk will be on “Selecting for Feed Efficiency”.  The Leachman name has been familiar in the beef cattle business for over 60 years.  Today, Lee Leachman operates Leachman Cattle of Colorado and markets over 1,000 bulls annually.   In addition, their Montana Range Meat company continues to market natural beef under new owners based in Billings, MT.

Also on the beef cattle program will be Dr. Dee Griffin, the very popular speaker who is a Production Management Veterinarian and Professor at the Great Plains Veterinarian Educational Center and University of Nebraska.    Dr. Griffin will also give two talks, one on “Antibiotic Pharmacology for Folks that Dip and Wear Spurs” and the other on “Cattle Health:  The Bottom Line”.

Also sharing her knowledge and expertise will be the always popular Dr. Temple Grandin from Colorado.  Dr. Grandin is considered a leading expert on animal behavior and livestock handling systems, has written several books on the subject, and has been seen nation-wide on numerous talk shows. Dr. Grandin is slated to talk on “Cattle Handling Strategies That Are Good for You and Your Cattle”.  She is also a featured speaker in the Equine Section.

Rounding out the Beef Section will be University of Missouri state beef cattle nutrition specialist Dr. Justin Sexten who has the assignment of helping producers keep their feed costs down without sacrificing cattle performance.  Dr. Sexten’s talk is titled “Taking Steps to Control Feed Costs”.  University of Missouri beef cattle geneticist, Dr. Bob Weaber, addresses “Managing Genetic Defects in the Beef Herd:  Protecting Your Herd and Seedstock Investment.”  While Dr. Brad White of Kansas State University completes the program by discussing the latest on “Pre- and Post-weaning Calf Health – Strategies for Success”.

The Missouri Livestock Symposium also touts well known speakers on forages, stock dogs, equine, sheep, meat goats, and on various subjects of interest around the home and farm.  In fact, according to Mathes,  Chef Dave Zino, the Executive Director of the Beef and Veal Culinary Center in Denver, will be on hand to unveil some new beef cuts and do a cooking demonstration.

All in all, the Missouri Livestock Symposium will feature speakers from 11 states.  In addition the Symposium features a top notch trade show, free admission with no registration needed, a free beef meal on Friday evening and a free Governor’s Style Luncheon at Noon on Saturday.

Doors to the 2009 Missouri Livestock Symposium open at 4 p.m. on Friday, December 4.  The Friday evening program includes Mike Adams, host of the nationally known syndicated radio show AgriTalk and Dr. Craig Payne, University of Missouri Extension Veterinarian, who will talk about “Agriculture Under Attack”.  The Friday evening program also includes presentations of the Missouri Livestock Symposium’s Livestock Person of the Year and the Agriculture Educators Lifetime Achievement Awards.

The Symposium will also have some winning classic tractors on display and there will be demonstrations on biodiesel production provided by the Truman State University Bulldog Biodiesel team in addition to other special attractions.

Hours for the Symposium are 4 PM to 10 PM on Friday, December 4, and 8 AM to 5 PM on Saturday, December 5.  The Symposium closes out on Saturday night at 8 PM with a concert by country music artist Steve Holy (www.steveholy.com).  For additional information about the Missouri Livestock Symposium, or to purchase concert tickets, call 660-665-9866, or see Symposium details at http://www.missourilivestock.com/.   The Missouri Livestock Symposium is held at the Kirksville Middle School, 1515 S Cottage Grove, Kirksville, MO.  Become a fan of the Missouri Livestock Symposium on Facebook by searching for Missouri Livestock Symposium.

KNITTING/CROCHET PROJECT: Red Scarf Project

The Red Scarf Project, a project of the Orphan Foundation of America, or Orphan.org, collects scarves to send in Valentine's Day care packages to college students who have aged out of foster care. These brave, young people are going it on their own and trying to improve their lives and the community by attending college. The care packages are welcome tokens of encouragement to young people who otherwise receive little to no mail.

http://nownormaknits2.typepad.com/red_scarf_project_2008/

Are there any 4-H members who are in the knitting or crocheting project who might be interested in doing this?  We’d be happy to coordinate sending in the finished scarves.  The deadline for sending them is early December.

Please contact Anne-marie Scott at jubalmusic@ktis.net or (573) 295-4310 if you would like to participate.
