The Master Gardener Program continues to be successful. The greenhouse’s effectiveness is dramatically increasing. The 2008 spring fundraiser raised over $26,000, double the amount from 2007. The CMMG greenhouse is the first in the state owned and operated by Master Gardeners. It is also being used to support educational programming for the general public, such as hosting a vegetable class in 2009.
CMMG level 1 Master Gardener training is one of the leaders in the state. The training increased to two classes per year in 2003. CMMG level II training is being looked at with envy and has greatly strengthened the program. The advanced program is helping retain Master Gardeners and provide them with more hands on opportunities. In the future, this training will be transformed into more programs dedicated to educating the community in many horticultural aspects. The educational committee is continuing to improve all training programs.
Master Gardener Don Schnieders appeared on a local radio show, twice a month, to address common gardening questions.
Nine different beatification projects were active around the community to which Master Gardeners contribute. The Demonstration Gardens in North Jefferson City continued to grow and has become more popular with city residents.
Central Missouri Master Gardeners are making a difference in Jefferson City and have a strong future. James Quinn and Jane Kempker are an ideal MU Extension team to support the MG Program. With their support and the commitment of so many Master Gardeners working together the program will continue to move forward and set new standards for all Master Gardeners. In September 2009, Jefferson City will host the Missouri State Master Gardener Conference.
