On
September 19, 2006 master gardeners were on hand to formally open
the Native American Medicine Wheel Garden of Herbs.
The
Medicine Wheel Garden follows the traditional Native American
circle, symbolic of the inter-connectedness of all life forms. Rocks
placed around the perimeter of the garden represent the moon’s
phases and an inner-path laid with flat rock symbolize positive
human traits such as trust, growth and tolerance.
Four planting beds contain medicinal, culinary, aromatic and
butterfly-attracting herbs. A central Peace Pole adorned with the
skull of a deer represents the creation of life.
Visitors are invited to place small stones at the base of the pole
while giving a prayer for peace and tolerance. Colorful ribbons
weighted with feathers, shells, beads and driftwood dance from the
top of four smaller poles that mark the north, south, east and west
ends of the garden.
