CMMG Greenhouse and Training Facility
This greenhouse was
planned in 2006, with fundraising and construction following in
late 2006 and early 2007. The principle uses of the facility are
to grow the plants needed by CMMG for the annual plant sale (its
primary fundraiser) and to train and educate avid gardeners
about greenhouse production. It is located just east of the
North Jefferson City facility building, which is located on
Sandstone Dr, along with the ‘Dog Park’. From concept to
completion this facility has had the City of Jefferson Parks and
Recreation as a partner and cooperator. CMMG owns the structure
and is responsible for the operation and maintenance, but the
city owns the land. Some key features of the facility are:
- The
greenhouse frame was designed and made in Morgan County; the
supplier of the structure and the equipment was Morgan
County Seeds;
- A crew
from Morgan County worked with CMMG volunteers to build it.
- The posts
are bolted into a concrete slab which was originally a floor
for a bus maintenance building.
-
Ventilation is passive by side curtains that drop down.
- It is 96
feet long by 30 feet wide.
- A
successful spring crop was grown for the 2007 plant sale,
which set a new record.
- It is
handicap accessible, including the bathrooms in the facility
building.
The North Jefferson City
facility building enhances the greenhouse by serving as a room
for any class any needing substantial use of plant and/or
potting material such as plant propagation. Hands on work can be
done in the facility building or the greenhouse.
