University of Missouri Extensionestablished business and
industry programs in response to a
statewide survey in which citizens
said a strong economy with new jobs
and new businesses is a high priority.
Specialists are focusing their efforts
on the area of highest need: small
businesses in which the owner/operator
fills all the managerial roles,
including personnel, marketing,
finance and transportation. Small
businesses are an important source of
new jobs. Nationwide, the smallest
businesses those employing 0-4 people
created 2.6 million new jobs from
1989-91. In Missouri, 87 percent of
businesses employ fewer than 20
people.
Rapid changes in the business world
are increasing the barriers to
profitability for new and existing
businesses. To stay ahead, small
business owners seek assistance with
product development, computer
connectivity, market analysis,
training and financing. Business and
industry specialists are developing
educational products to help small
businesses respond to these
challenges.
