Youth Serving on Extension Councils – Steve Henness, 4-H Youth Development Specialist

Steve Henness presented a Power Point Presentation on findings from a recent survey and focus group results on how beneficial young adults are to Extension.  The focus group portion of the project involved asking groups of youth (ages 15-17) and young adults (18-25) questions about past, present, and potential involvement with county extension councils.

Steve informed members that working together, we can get more accomplished.  Two areas that are very important are:

  1. Retain Youth
  2. Youth Leadership Development

Surveys were sent out and approximately 50 were returned.  Some of the findings are:

  1. Youth Involvement              8%
  2. No Youth Involvement      36%
  3. Did Not Report                 56%

  1. Young Adults on Councils          13%
  2. No Young Adults on Councils    31%
  3. No Response                             56%

More than one-third surveyed would like to see increased youth participation.

Up to 20 councils will be selected through an application process in March 2006 to pilot this project.

Missouri is one of three states that are receiving funding to experiment with this project.
