They are:

2.  You are required to show your horse in showmanship at the county horse show.

3.  You must turn in your completed project record book to extension office by August 31.

Please note that this is in addition to your individual club requirements for project completion.  Please check with your club leader to verify those requirements.

HORSE ENROLLMENT FORMS                                                                                                       Ben Gallup

The enrollment forms for horse members are to be signed by both the project and club leader and turned into the county office on or before May 1.  Each year there are concerns expressed that a few members are not following the guidelines of the agreement which are found on the second page of the form.  When members sign the contract they have acknowledged an understanding of the rules.  New this year, the form has extra sheets which allow a member to list more than one horse.   Please note the following two items, which are paraphrased from the form, addressing questions I hear each and every year……   A horse may be boarded at a location other than the 4-H project member’s home, but it must not receive professional training after May 1 of the project year.  Additional clarification of this rule may be found on the enrollment form.

The Countywide horse committee has the ultimate authority to allow substitution of a project horse in case of extenuating circumstances (i.e. death, debilitating illness or lameness of a project horse).  For example, if a member’s horse dies on June 1, the county wide horse committee decides if they can they substitute another horse.

Please take time to read all of the rules.  The horse project manual is another source of information and it is found on the 4-H web page at http://4h.missouri.edu

ON LINE HORSE INFORMATION SUPPORTED BY EXTENSION                                             Ben Gallup

HorseQuest provides Internet visitors with reliable and up-to-date horse information through a knowledge base of commonly asked questions that have science-based, peer-reviewed answers.  In addition, online lessons use self-paced learning objects to help users learn more about specialized areas of equine science. The newest lesson being introduced is a module for new and prospective horse owners.

WOW!!!!  Horse project members…special news for you!   A fantastic youth horse event and horse show will be held at the American Royal complex, Hale Arena, during the week end of October 24-25 with special classes for 4-H members.  In addition to our event, the Prairie Circuit Rodeo Finals will be occurring in the evenings at Kemper the same week end.

However, stalls will be in limited numbers and to ensure your participation for this event, you should try to do both of these activities.  We hope you can attend a Purina Mills Horse Owner’s Workshop sometime soon and sign up at the workshop.  Check the upcoming schedules in your issue of the Purina Checkerboard Publication or refer to the web site:    http://horse.purinamills.com/events/events.asp  Secondly, enroll in Omolene University which is a great equine interactive education site.  It’s easy and free to sign up by going to:   http://www.omoleneuniversity.com/

There will be two full days of judged classes and timed events for youth in addition to a fun filled evening with a free barbeque for everyone.  Purina and the American Royal are making sure this is going to be an affordable, positive and absolutely fun filled weekend for youth.  Please watch the American Royal Web site for more details and the show bill in the near future.    http://www.americanroyal.com/

The planning committee includes both Missouri and Kansas 4-H Youth and Livestock Extension Staff, Ernie Rodina, Purina representatives, and horse event sponsors and volunteers.  Questions?  Debbie Davis, Clinton County 4-H Youth Specialist  davisdd@missouri.edu or 816-539-3765

Horse Clarification Stock/Non-Stock Type: Ben Gallup

This is an additional guideline to be added to the State 4-H Horsemanship Show guidelines:

Exhibitors should show their horse in the most appropriate division for their breed or type of horse. These divisions

should take into consideration the breed differences in head carriage and animation. Stock-type horses will have a lowered natural head carriage with flat knee action for the jog and lope. Stock-type includes Quarter Horse, Appaloosa, Buckskin, Palomino, and Paint. Non-stock (Saddle) type horses will have a natural high head carriage with breaking knee action in the trot and canter. Non-stock (Saddle) type includes American Saddlebred,

American Show Horse, Arabian, Morgan and Thoroughbred. Exhibitors showing mixed breed horses should select

the division most closely fitting the horse's head carriage and animation. It is in the exhibitor's best interest to

enter the appropriate division.
